On September 5th, the Trump administration announced perhaps their most controversial decision
yet: the ending of DACA, also known as the Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals program. An Obama era program, DACA has helped hundreds of thousands
of immigrants become working members of society in a way that afforded
them protection. The ending of this programs places countless people at
risk of losing everything they have worked hard to establish, and it is
incredibly frightening for DACA recipients to now essentially be in limbo
with their status in the United States.
The decision to abandon DACA has already begun to take place, as no new
immigrants will be protected under the program. Moreover, no new advance
parole requests based on a previously approved DACA will be considered.
If Congress does not come up with an alternative solution, those currently
covered will lose their status as of March 6, 2018. If this happens, over
800,000 young adults will face deportation to the country of their parents’
origin, countries they have nothing established in.
Most importantly, if you currently have DACA and it expires between now
and March 5, 2018, then the DACA renewal must be submitted by October 5, 2017.
If you are a recipient of DACA, you are likely concerned about what will
happen to you in the coming months. This is why it is essential you enlist
