On September 26th, the University of Houston Law Center Immigration Clinic recognized 20 community figures who champion equality and justice by:

  • fighting for immigration reform,
  • creating and maintaining relationships with international businesses,
  • and helping underserved communities through philanthropic and charitable efforts.

Attorney Susham Modi was one of the 2019 Beacons of Light recognized at the Arrival Awards, an annual celebration of diversity and legal immigration. As a stalwart advocate for immigrants, Attorney Modi proudly attended the event to receive his award and connect with others in Houston who share his purpose and drive.

Susham Modi Named "Beacon of Light" for Immigration AdvocacyReaching Audiences That Matter

Attorney Susham Modi has been working with immigration cases for years. To meet his goal of helping as many people as he can, Attorney Modi has helped educate and inform those who can make a real difference in immigration policy and immigrant services. He started his legal work at Harvard Law School’s Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program, where he supervised students and worked on complex immigration cases.

After moving to Houston, he stayed involved in the community by working with the University of Houston Law Center Immigration Clinic, where he supervises students who work on pro-bono cases for immigrants from all around the globe and co-teaches Asylum and Refugee Law. Attorney Modi has also lectured for the Rice University Graduate Program Immigration Law & Policy Course and the Joseph A. Vail Workshop. Susham Modi Named "Beacon of Light" for Immigration Advocacy.

Because attorneys aren’t the only people who play a role in immigrant futures, Attorney Modi has also reached out to other parties who work in the field. He has spoken for groups including:

  • Houston Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association
  • U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) of Houston
  • Galveston County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association
  • Judges of Harris County Criminal District Court

Attorney Modi’s continued outreach and community involvement help those in our law enforcement system understand the other side of the story. He hopes to continue sharing his knowledge with other influential Texas communities.
