Attorney Modi Attends the HIRC's 30th Anniversary Celebration

The Modi Law Firm, PLLC's owner, Susham M. Modi attended the Harvard Immigration & Refugee Clinical Program's 30th Anniversary Celebration: 30 Years of Social Change Lawyering on June 17, 2014. HIRC's one-day conference, celebrating its 30th anniversary, hosted a variety of leaders in the field, including federal judges, government officials, and notable practitioners and scholars.

Among other topics, panelists at the event discussed cutting-edge issues including immigration representation and access to justice, strategies for advancing immigrants' rights, legislative advocacy, and direct representation. Attorney Ira Kurzban, author of Kurzban's Immigration Law Sourcebook, served as a panelist in "Reflections on 30 years of Social Justice Lawyering." The Modi Law Firm, PLLC has previously worked with Mr. Kurzan's office, and Mr. Modi was delighted to see him speak at the conference.

Houston immigration attorney Susham Modi previously worked as an Attorney Advocate at Harvard Law School's Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program (HIRC) with their excellent director Deborah Anker. Attorney Modi worked on complex matters including asylum, deportation defense, and family-based applications.

HIRC has generally focused on representing individuals who: (1) have been victims of domestic violence and other crimes; (2) are seeking asylum or similar protections; and (3) need defense in their deportation proceedings. The organization has also been involved in policy advocacy and, more recently, has focused on the immigration consequences of criminal convictions for non-citizens.
